Guide to Selection / Identification of bearing Number

Guide to Selection of Bearing / Identification of bearing Number

In industries many of us encounter the term Bearing in maintenance field, Possibly 8 out of  10 machines have bearings in it.
While maintenance/overhaul of machines its very necessary to check the condition of bearings to extend the life of machines, Proper selection of bearings & lubricating of bearings is very necessary to reduce the downtime & avoid delays in timely execution of the designated task.

I will be briefing you to Types of bearing and ways to Identify the bearing number, but  before starting lets know the meaning of bearing

bearing is a machine element that constrains relative motion to only the desired motion, and reduces friction between moving parts. The design of the bearing may, for example, provide for free linear movement of the moving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, it may prevent a motion by controlling the vectors of normal forces that bear on the moving parts. Most bearings facilitate the desired motion by minimizing friction.

Lets now get back to know & understand the types of bearing. Below mentioned are some common types of bearing used commonly in day to day machines:
  1. Deep Groove Ball Bearing.
  2. Self Aligning Roller Bearing.
  3. Cylindrical Roller Bearing.
  4. Tapered Roller Bearing.
  5. Thrust Bearing.
  6. Angular Contact Ball Bearing.
  7. Needle Roller Bearing.
  8. Self Aligning Ball Bearing
  9. Miniature of Bearing.
Each bearing you encounter have some Number engraved on their Outer or Inner raceway  for example Bearing Number "6210" Also called as bearing nomenclature, each number will  have a particular meaning in its own way.

Lets now try to understand or learn to crack this nomenclature. Lets take bearing Number "6208  ZZ C3"

  • First Numeric will tell you the Type of Bearing for this it is "6" which is designated for Deep Groove Ball Bearing.
  • Second Numeric value will tell the dimensional series for this bearing it is  "2" which is designated for Dimensional series 2.
  • Last two numeric value will tell you about the Inner Diameter of the bearing or Shaft Outer  Diameter  in which bearing is to be mounted when it is multiplied with 5, for this its "08" now when 08 is Multiplied with 5 gives 40 - Approximately the ID of bearing will be 40mm.
  • Succeeding alphabetic will tell us about the side casing of bearing, for this it is ZZ which means the inner of the bearing is covered with Metallic Cover, Where 2RS or RS  stands for rubber covering, This type of bearing are suitable for application where bearing has to perform under heavy dust environment.
  • Further after covering notation there is nomenclature for bearing clearance, Here notation for bearing clearance is C3, Higher the C Value more the clearance between the inner & outer raceway, High value clearance bearing are suggested where the bearing has to perform under heavy vibration or Temperature to avoid breaking of bearing because of vibration or seizure of bearing due to expansion of bearing metal because of Temperature.
Hope this content will help you with the selection of right bearing for your desired application & understanding the bearing naomenclature will help you to select right bearing for your application.
